AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are the practice of making your business visible inside AI answers — when a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity "who's the best [what you do] near me," your name either comes up or it doesn't. For New Jersey businesses this is the quietest land-grab in local marketing: most competitors haven't started, and AI assistants increasingly sit between you and your next customer.
Why this matters more in 2026 than last year
Buying behavior split. Google searches still happen, but a growing share of high-intent questions — "who can build AI for my business in NJ," "best commercial roofer near Red Bank," "AI receptionist for a dental office" — are asked conversationally, and the AI answers with two or three names, not ten blue links. Third place in an AI answer is the new page two. Guides from Stackmatix and LLMrefs document the shift; what most coverage misses is how measurable it's become.
How AI assistants decide who to recommend
Language models synthesize from what they can read and verify. In practice, recommendation visibility comes from:
- Entity consistency. The same business name, location, and one-sentence description everywhere — your site, directories, LinkedIn, press. Contradictions make models drop you.
- Structured data. LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schema tell machines exactly what you do and where. Most NJ small-business sites have none.
- Citable, question-shaped content. AI quotes passages that directly answer questions with verifiable specifics. "We reduced proposal time from days to minutes using a pricing engine trained on 13,000 historical estimates" is quotable; "we deliver innovative solutions" is not.
- Crawler access. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot need explicit permission in robots.txt, plus an llms.txt summary. A surprising number of sites block them by accident.
- Third-party corroboration. Directory listings, reviews, and press give models independent confirmation you're real and reputable.
You can't manage what you don't measure
Here's the part we know from building, not reading: AI share-of-voice is measurable. We built a benchmarking system for a life-sciences client that queries a panel of leading models — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity — with the questions their buyers actually ask, across the full buyer journey, and scores how often each brand gets named versus competitors. It also audits why: what evidence the models see, which claims they trust, where the gaps are.
That turns AEO from faith-based marketing into an engineering loop: benchmark → fix what the models see → re-benchmark quarterly. It's the same discipline we apply to our own site — every fix we recommend to clients, from FAQ schema to llms.txt to entity cleanup, is running on singletask.ai right now.
A practical AEO/GEO checklist for NJ businesses
- Add LocalBusiness schema with your real address, phone, service area, and services.
- Publish an llms.txt at your domain root summarizing who you are, where you are, and what you do — with key facts a model can quote.
- Allow AI crawlers explicitly in robots.txt.
- Restructure your key pages around the questions customers actually ask, with direct answers in the first paragraph and FAQ schema behind them.
- Claim and complete Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, and the major industry directories — with identical descriptions.
- Benchmark your AI share-of-voice before and after. Otherwise you're guessing.
Where this is heading
Every earlier search shift — desktop to mobile, web to maps — rewarded the businesses that moved before it was obvious. AI answers are this decade's version, and in New Jersey the window is still open: for most local queries the models have thin, inconsistent data and are easy to win.
We offer AI search visibility (AEO/GEO) services built on the benchmark system above — measurement first, then the fixes, from a team whose founder scaled a healthcare platform to 6M+ monthly organic visitors in the last search era.
